Scholarship Information Mill Hill School Visit School's Web Site Scholarships, Exhibitions and Bursaries Information for applicants for places in all year groups entering the School in September each year. Fourth Form Awards General Terms and Conditions Candidates for Scholarships must be over 12 years old and under 14 years old on 1st June and must be registered for entry to the School in September. The School will require a written reference on each candidate from the Head of his or her present school. All Awards are reviewed annually and are subject to the recipient performing at a satisfactory standard during the course of the preceding year. The value of an Award will attract the same annual percentage rise as the School Fees. Academic Awards Mill Hill School funds up to ten Academic Awards annually. These are available equally to boys and girls, and to both day and boarding pupils. Academic Scholarships carry a value of up to half fees; Exhibitions may have a value up to one quarter fees. All candidates for an Academic Award must sit the Scholarship Examinations, which will be held in January. Candidates will normally be expected to sit papers in English, Mathematics, Science, French and Latin, plus a Non-Verbal Intelligence Test. Candidates not currently taking Latin will not sit the Latin paper. Bursaries Bursaries (including boarding scholarships) will be awarded to pupils entering the Fourth Form. They are offered at the discretion of the Headmaster for a specified period. Before a bursary is awarded a detailed statement of the parents' financial circumstances will be required in writing. Applications for bursaries should be made by letter to the Headmaster, who will take into account the pupil's personal qualities and aptitudes and the contribution he or she is likely to make to the School.
The value of a bursary is up to 100% remission of fees and will be dependent on proven financial need. Selection is through examination and interviews, which will be held at the School in January. Music Awards Music Scholarships and Exhibitions may be awarded annually; the value of these is up to half fees. Candidates may enter for either an Academic Award or a Music Award or for both. Candidates for a Music Award who do not wish to sit the Academic Scholarship Examinations should nevertheless expect to perform at a sound level in the School's Entrance Examinations. Art Awards One Art Award may be made annually; the value of this is up to one quarter fees. Candidates will be required to submit a portfolio of recent work. ![]() Sixth Form Awards General Terms and Conditions Sixth Form awards are normally available to external applicants only. Candidates for Sixth Form awards must be registered for entry to the Sixth Form in September. The School will require a written reference on each candidate from the Head of his or her present school. All Awards are reviewed annually and are subject to the recipient performing at a satisfactory standard during the course of the preceding year. The value of an Award will attract the same annual percentage rise as the School Fees. Academic Awards Up to two Sixth Form Academic Scholarships are awarded annually; the value of these is up to half fees. A number of Exhibitions of up to one quarter fees may also be awarded. Candidates are required to sit Scholarship Examinations in their choice of two of the subjects they intend to take for A level at Mill Hill. The syllabus for these examinations will not be more than the proportion of the GCSE syllabus which could reasonably be expected to have been covered by the time of the Examinations. Selected candidates will be invited to return for interviews a week later. Candidates for Art will be required to submit a portfolio of work on the day of the written examinations. The Winfrey Scholarship is awarded annually to a Lower Sixth Form pupil taking History A level, or a History component within another A level subject. Music Scholarships Candidates for Music Scholarships are required to perform a programme of 20 minutes duration. They will then be interviewed and will take brief aural and sight reading tests. Bursaries Bursaries are available for Sixth Form pupils subject to the same conditions as set out previously for Fourth Form and Remove pupils. Application Procedures An application for a Scholarship or Exhibition should be made on the appropriate Application Form by the date shown below. A request for a bursary should be made in writing to the Headmaster at the earliest possible stage of an application.
Further Information on Music Auditions At Fourth Form level, candidates for a Music Scholarship will normally be expected to have reached the standard (though not necessarily to have sat the examination) of Grade 6 in piano or Grade 5 in an orchestral instrument. For a Music Exhibition, one grade lower would be expected. Candidates may also offer a second instrument at a lower level and/or voice, and/or composition. Two contrasting pieces will be expected and there will also be aural and sight reading tests. At Sixth Form level, candidates for a Music Scholarship will normally be expected to have reached the standard (though not necessarily to have sat the examination) of Grade 8 in piano or Grade 7 in an orchestral instrument. A second instrument at a lower level, and/or voice, and/or composition will also be expected. Candidates should prepare a programme of approximately 20 minutes duration. There will also be aural and sight reading tests. Musical ability may also be taken into account in making other academic awards.
